How does the SmartXide DOT Fractional CO₂ laser work?

The SmartXide Dot laser penetrates into the dermis, which is the supporting layer of the skin and which contains most of the skin’s collagen. SmartXide Dot targets water in these tissues, resulting in tissue ablation inside the dot. Each dot is surrounded by a zone of thermal tissue damage formed by the laser.  This thermal damage is responsible for the superior results seen with CO₂ lasers.

What areas can I treat with the SmartXide DOT Fractional CO₂ laser?

Unlike previous CO₂ laser treatments, which were restricted to the face, SmartXide Dot can be used

on many areas of the body, including the eyelids, hands, elbows, neck and décolletage.  In addition to areas of loose skin, wrinkled skin, or even crepe paper skin, SmartXide Dot provides excellent results when used for scar revision, and for treatment of pigmentation problems and stretch marks.

How quickly will I see results from the SmartXide DOT Fractional CO₂ laser?

Collagen shrinkage as a result of thermal damage results in some immediate skin tightening.  More importantly, further improvements in skin tightness and collagen density occur as a result of collagen remodeling and begin about 30 days after the treatment.  These improvements continue for up to six months after the treatment.

Does the SmartXide DOT Fractional CO₂ treatment hurt?

We will numb the treatment area with topical anesthetic prior to treatment with the SmartXide.  We also use a Zimmer air cooling system to further minimize discomfort.

How is the SmartXide DOT laser different from older fully ablative CO₂ lasers?

Fully ablative CO₂ laser remove the entire skin surface.  This results in a somewhat long and painful

healing process with up to a month of downtime.  Because the SmartXide Dot leaves the skin around each dot intact, the skin heals in from the surrounding tissue.  Therefore, healing times are drastically diminished - as are potential complications. 

How many SmartXide DOT Fractional CO₂ treatments will I need?

We will customize your treatment protocol to best fit your current skin condition, desired outcome, and tolerance for social downtime.  The more aggressive we are with our treatment settings, the less likely it is that you will need multiple treatments.  Excellent results can often be achieved with a single session.  However, patients with deep wrinkles, excessive laxity, or deep scarring will need 2 - 5 treatments to achieve their desired result.
